PHASE I: Qualify
Qualify
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become a CNA; we want to help you get there. Success in the Marquis Nursing Assistant Training Program starts with understanding and meeting the following requirements:
MEET ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Ability to pass a criminal background check
Authorized to work lawfully in the United States
At least 17 years of age
Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position, including, but not limited to: lift up to 40 pounds, bend, squat, and be on your feet for long periods of time
Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English Language
(ESL level 6)
Possess a passion for working with senior population
Be a team player who is professional, attentive, and ready to participate
Have effective communication with classmates, residents and staff

QUESTION
Do I need to have experience?
ANSWER
If you have a passion for making a difference in the lives of seniors, prior caregiving experience is not required.
QUESTION
How do I know if my application was received and being considered?
ANSWER
After you complete your online application and ‘submit’ it, you will receive a notification on your computer screen that your application was received and will be reviewed. Email notifications will also be sent to the email address associated with your profile. Those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted directly by the Staffing Director of the facility they have applied to. The interview process also includes a skills assessment and a completion of a questionnaire.
QUESTION
Will I be notified if I'm not accepted into the class?
ANSWER
Yes. You should receive an email notifying you that you were not selected. Due to the large volume of applications we receive, we encourage you to apply again when the next class is open if you meet the requirements.
Phase II: Learn
Learn
The primary responsibility of a candidate that is selected for the Nursing Assistant training class is to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to obtain certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) through participation in the facility’s planned educational program.
COMPLETE CLASSROOM PORTION OF THE PROGRAM
Attend all scheduled classroom days, typically held Monday through Friday, 8am-3pm
Complete the required 65 classroom hours:
At least 28 hours of supervised classroom/laboratory instruction with return student demonstrations of learned skills to determine comprehension and competency
Successfully demonstrate all items on the skills checklist while in a classroom setting
Pass 2 exams with a score of 75% or greater
RECEIVE CPR CERTIFICATION TAUGHT BY QUALIFIED INSTRUCTOR
All students are required to have a BLS AHA CPR Certification
COMPLETE CLINICAL PORTION OF THE PROGRAM:
Attend all scheduled clinical days. Clinicals are held, Monday through Friday from 5:45am – 2pm
Complete a minimum of 40 clinical hours: during the clinical portion of the program, you will provide direct care to residents in a Marquis facility, under the supervision of our Clinical Instructor
ATTEND GRADUATION

QUESTION
What happens if I score below 75% on one of the exams?
ANSWER
One retake is allowed. If you fail the exam a second time, you are dismissed from the program.
QUESTION
What happens if I miss a scheduled day of class or clinical?
ANSWER
Limited makeup days are available. If the hours cannot be made up within the allotted makeup time, you are dismissed from the program.
QUESTION
If I am dismissed from the program, am I allowed to apply again?
ANSWER
Students are considered for re-entry in the program if they can demonstrate that previous barriers to success have been eliminated.
Phase III: Certify
Certify
Launch your career as a Nursing Assistant; begin working at a Marquis facility while pursuing your CNA Certification.
SUBMIT AN APPLICATION TO OREGON STATE BOARD OF NURSING (OSBN)
OSBN will process and approve your application
Once your application has been approved, you can register for your board exam
STUDY AND PREPARE
Complete your electronic fingerprints
Attend a Marquis hosted review session
Sessions are led by Marquis Instructors, free of charge, and prepare you for the written and skills portion of the exam

The written portion for the board exam consists of 80 questions that must be completed within 90 minutes. A score of 73% or better is considered passing
The skills portion for the board exam consists of demonstrating 3 or 4 manual skills over a 45-minute time period. You must complete all key steps and 80% of the non-key steps to pass the skills test
RECEIVE OSBN ISSUED CNA LICENSE!

QUESTION
How long can I work as a Nursing Assistant while pursuing my CNA Certification?
ANSWER
You can work as a Nursing Assistant for 120 days from your Date of Hire.
QUESTION
How long after I submit my application can I take my board exam?
ANSWER
Your application will typically be approved within one week of submission. From there, it depends on what testing options in your area are available.
QUESTION
Do I have to take the test at a Marquis location?
ANSWER
This is not required, but it is STRONGLY encouraged. You have a higher likelihood of passing at a Marquis location-it’s the same place where your review session will be held, so you will practice exactly where you will be tested.
QUESTION
What if I fail one portion of the exam? Do I have to retake both portions?
ANSWER
You only retake the portion of the exam (written or skills) that you failed. You have unlimited retakes for one year from application date. There is a retake fee associated with each portion ($25 written, $45 skills).
