Long Term Care

How do I chose a facility?

While the services offered at nursing homes are generally fairly similar, the homes themselves differ widely.
Much of your decision should be made based on the “character” of the home. But there are some additional factors that should be considered when evaluating a home for Skilled or Long Term Care:
  • Location: Is it close to family and friends? Moves can be traumatic. Ease the transition by choosing a facility that loved ones can visit easily. Is the facility within your doctor's practice area?
  • Atmosphere: Is the building and property pleasant, clean, and homey? Are the employees and residents happy, and do they seem to enjoy each other's company?
  • Qualifications of staff: Is the manager accessible? What initial or on-going training does the staff receive? Are you comfortable with the responsibilities the facility places on staff?
  • Activities: Is the activity program able to meet the needs of varying cognitive and physical levels? Does the program involve community integration? How often do the residents go on outings? What kind of transportation is available?
