Assisted Living

How do I choose a facility?

Most Assisted Living facilities offer largely the same services: meals, activities, housekeeping, a full time care-giving staff, and the dignity and privacy that comes with individual apartments. That being said, all Assisted Living Facilities are not equal.

Consider the following when you’re looking at facilities:

  • Location: Is it close to family and friends? Moves can be traumatic. Ease the transition by choosing a facility that loved ones can visit easily.
  • Changes in service needs: What is the facility’s policy if additional care is required? Do they work closely with residents and families to determine when a different level of care becomes necessary?
  • Atmosphere: Is the building and property pleasant, clean, and homey? Are the employees and residents happy, and do they seem to enjoy each other's company?
  • Qualifications of staff: Is the manager accessible? What initial or on-going training does the staff receive? Are you comfortable with the responsibilities the facility places on staff?
  • Activities: Does the activity program meet the needs of a diverse population? Does the program involve community integration? How often do the residents go on outings? What kind of transportation is available?
